For local people in Rome eating al fresco is a ritual.
Whether it’s a table in a small square in the historic center, a panoramic terrace, or a trattoria nestled in the Roman countryside. Let’s discover Rome’s best neighborhoods for al fresco dining.
An ancient legacy
The Romans’ passion for outdoor dining has its roots in ancient times. Already in ancient Rome, banquets were often held in the gardens (horti) or peristyles of patrician houses, where the open air and nature helped make the experience of food something deeper than mere nourishment. This cultural legacy has survived the centuries and still lives on today in restaurants with outdoor seating, picnics in the Castelli Romani area, or Sunday lunches in trattorias along the narrow and charming streets of Trastevere.

The tradition of eating outdoors
Al fresco dining often coincides with a day trip. Especially on Sundays, it’s an institution in Rome. From the fraschette of Ariccia to the trattorias of Tivoli, from the Fregene coastline to the vineyards of the Alban Hills, eating outdoors away from the city means escaping the urban chaos. It also means rediscovering a more natural rhythm and enjoying Roman cuisine in a rustic setting. Furthermore, for Romans, meals are above all a moment of socialization. Eating outdoors facilitates meeting, chatting, and relaxing.
Where to eat al fresco in Rome
Rome, with its piazzas, alleyways, and hidden courtyards, is a city that invites you to enjoy the outdoors. The line between public and private space is often blurred: an outdoor bar becomes a living room, a terrace transforms into a dining room, a sidewalk hosts a romantic dinner. Let’s discover together some of the best areas in Rome for al fresco dining.

Trastevere
This is one of Rome’s neighborhoods where outdoor dining is a must! Besides the traditional trattorias with tables overlooking the cobblestone streets, there are also large and unique green spaces. Such as Ripa Grande (Lungotevere Ripa, 3). Nestled in an enchanting garden in the heart of Trastevere, it’s open every summer starting in June. Restaurants, cocktail bars, exhibitions, and live music are all available. It’s truly not to be missed.

Testaccio
Another popular neighborhood in Rome, beloved by locals. Once an industrial area, it’s now the beating heart of traditional Roman cuisine and nightlife. Here, you’ll find a truly unique place called Collettivo Gastronomico Testaccio (Largo Dino Frisullo, 1). Located in the former slaughterhouse area, the City of the Other Economy, it’s a mix of cuisine, wine, outdoor spaces, and a market, also ideal for live music. The food is truly excellent.
Pigneto
An urban neighborhood in Rome, now synonymous with good food, innovation, and street art. Here, we find a wide variety of options for all tastes and ages. Borgo Pigneto (Via Prenestina, 216) is one of the most unique gathering places in this area. A green space in an urban setting, with a picnic area, stilt houses, food trucks, and drinks. Truly beautiful! Another place to go is Necci dal 1924 (Via Fanfulla da Lodi, 68). From breakfast to dinner, it’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the neighborhood atmosphere. That’s why we chose it as the location for one of our most beautiful tours: a candlelight wine tasting experience in an ancient Roman cave.

Garbatella
Today, one of the trendiest district, Garbatella has reclaimed its former glory. In fact, this neighborhood was once home to workers who worked at the port and the general markets in the Ostiense area. The small houses were called lotti, parcels. Today, the distinctive architectural style and typical working-class atmosphere make this neighborhood one of the most beloved by Romans. Latteria Garbatella (Piazza Geremia Bonomelli, 9) is one of the most charming places to enjoy an aperitivo or dinner. Located in the heart of the historic lotti, once the neighborhood dairy, it has a mini garden with outdoor tables and serves excellent cocktails.
