The Dolce & Gabbana Exhibition approaches its conclusion
At the magnificent Palazzo delle Esposizioni in the heart of Rome, the exhibition titled “From the Heart to the Hands” by Dolce & Gabbana is nearing its end.
A bustling crowd gathers at the entrance, with tickets nearly sold out for this fashion-themed showcase. This exhibition by Dolce & Gabbana may hold much more significance than it initially appears.
Dolce e Gabbana, the stylists
Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana : do they really need an introduction? Cherished yet often critiqued, they are key figures in the Made in Italy movement. To grasp the reasons behind their success, simply visit this exhibition, which has been masterfully curated by Florence Müller. Before its remarkable display in Rome, this showcase received significant acclaim in both Paris and Milan. If there were an Oscar for exhibition organizers, she would certainly take home the award!
What Is “From the Heart to the Hands”?
The title of this showcase reflects a journey through the essence of two of the fashion industry’s most celebrated designers. It explores how ideas, born from inspiration, transform through a distinctive creative process into the hands of skilled artisans. In essence, it’s a true homage to craftsmanship and creativity.

E li occhi l’ardiscon di guardare – and their eyes dare to look at
A vibrant carousel of colors and evolving fascinations draws inspiration from culture—both its history and material aspects—alongside folklore, which, before being labeled as kitsch, embodies soul, memory, and imagination. It’s essential to move beyond the stereotypes and commercial inconsistencies often associated with fashion. This showcase serves as an entry point into the dynamic nature of the creative process.
A Unique Showcase
The Palazzo delle Esposizioni di Roma presents an extraordinary venue for this exhibition that is soon to journey from the Capital of Italy to the States. With fourteen interconnected halls, the showcase explores various themes, highlighting handcrafting including the vibrant art of blown glass from Murano. A glass dress, while not intended for wear, stands as a true masterpiece, celebrating the pinnacle of refined craftsmanship. From shoes to glasses, and bags to jewelry, this exhibition is a true triumph of artisan skill.
Hall 1: the pyramyd which celebrates handmaking
The first all which opens the showcase is circular. We are small at the foot of a conic pyramyd from where incredible dresses look at us. This is a display of the most remarkable collections from the stylists. This all alone, will be enough to justify the entire exhibition, but we ignore that this is just the beginning for our eyes. On the splendid walls of the palace, the self portaits by the artist Anne Duong are involved in a dialogue with the Dolce & Gabbana creations, taking us around the time and the world.

The Gattopardo by Visconti and the Sicilian Chariot
Here comes Sicily, brimming with mystery and allure. For us Italians, just mentioning Gattopardo (an iconic movie form the ’60) brings to mind not only the elegance of filmmaking and the dolce vita. It also recalls themes of politics, decadence, and romanticism. From the black-and-white ambiance of Gattopardo, we transition into the vibrant explosion of traditional Sicilian carriage decorations and ceramic artistry. We then find ourselves immersed in the radiant white grandeur of the Baroque style (White Baroque hall), where creations transform into breathtaking sculptures. It’s an experience that evokes pure emotion.
Handcrafted in Italy
Let’s delve into the room number 9, perhaps the most romantic hall of all. Here, you’ll find the tailor’s atelier, filled with the tools of handmade craftsmanship: scissors, irons, decorative trims, ribbons, fabrics, and sequins. The skilled hands that embroider, compose, and sew create magic. Can these elements from a bygone era coexist in our modern digital world? It certainly seems so. The blend of artisan techniques and digital innovation is truly comforting. Both the needle and the pixel, guided by human creativity, engage in a contemporary dialogue that celebrates tradition and modernity.

Celebrating Artistic Creations
In their quest for inspiration, Dolce & Gabbana delve into the realm of art. The two halls, named Architectural & Pictorial and Dream of Divinity, serve as evidence of this exploration. The dresses reflect the most exquisite art and the essence of human culture. From Etruscan jars to Peruvian wool, and from Byzantine mosaics to ancient sculptures. The rich tapestry of history is presented through the eyes and hands of Dolce & Gabbana, promising to captivate and astonish you.
Dolce & Gabbana at the Opera
Hall 8: Welcome to the Opera House! On one side, a stunning theatrical gallery. On the other side an array of magnificent costumes. Against the wall a 20-meter-long table is adorned with an abundance of decorations, food, fruits, and flowers that even the imagination of Walt Disney could not have conjured so lavishly. In front of the table stand Tosca and Turandot, along with Violetta and Norma. And in between it all… we are left in awe, our mouths agape and our eyes feasting on the spectacle.
The Role of Design in Everyday Life
Design can be worn, exhibited, served, scented, and even enjoyed as a drink, such as coffee. Design seamlessly integrates into our daily lives, becoming an intrinsic part of our routines. This is a design that fosters connections rather than creating divisions—luxurious yet accessible to many. We have admired it in the stunning moka coffee makers by Bialetti, crafting stylish coffee cups and pots. The vibrant patterns draw inspiration from Sicilian ceramics, featuring colorful or white and turquoise designs that evoke the Mediterranean ambiance. Even the esteemed winemakers Donnafugata have succumbed to this allure, embracing Dolce & Gabbana’s design for their exquisite wine bottles, ready to grace your table.

Next Stop: Miami
