When in Rome: taxi or Uber?

If you’re in Rome and looking for a convenient way to get around, perhaps after a long walk through the Imperial Forums and the Colosseum, you might find yourself having to choose between a taxi or an Uber. Which is better? Let’s find out together!

Taxis in Rome: a few tips

Official taxis in Rome are white, with the TAXI sign and their license number clearly visible. They don’t usually stop by raising your hand. To hail one, you can use the ChiamaTaxi app or call 06 06 09. They usually take 3-5 minutes. When calling a taxi, always provide your address and write down the ID number, which will be printed on the door of the vehicle. This way, you can’t get a wrong number. The driver starts the meter as soon as he receives the call, not when you get in. To save on this, you can choose to go directly to one of the dedicated taxi stations with the orange sign. All taxis are required by law to have a POS terminal for credit card payments. We recommend that you always inform the taxi driver that you wish to pay by card before getting in. This will avoid any inconvenience.

Pros:

There are taxi ranks everywhere: at Termini, in the city center, near the monuments as Pantheon.

Fixed fares to/from the airports. If your destination is Fiumicino or Ciampino airports, there’s a fixed fare (from Fiumicino to the city center, for example, it’s €50 all-inclusive).

You don’t need an app. Just go to a taxi stand and take the first taxi in line.

Cons:

Beware of scammers. Not everyone is honest. Someone might forget to turn on the meter or take unnecessary detours to increase the fare.

Long waits. If it’s raining or late at night, or on special days like New Year’s Eve or other holidays, finding a free taxi can be a challenge.

Uber in Rome: different from the norm

Yes, Uber is available in Rome, but… not with the same affordable cars found in other cities. In Italy, Uber can only operate with chauffeur-driven cars (NCC), so the cars are usually high-end (Mercedes, Audi, etc.), and consequently, the prices are higher. To use an Uber and save a bit, you can try downloading the Free Now app. From there, you can choose the best fare between a taxi or Uber.

Pros:

Top service. Clean cars, professional drivers, and on-time arrival wherever you want.

Clear app. See the price upfront, no surprises.

Pay everything through the app. No cash, no credit cards.

Cons:

It costs more. Even a short trip can cost 20-30 euros.

There aren’t always many cars available. Sometimes you have to wait longer than expected.

Which one to choose?

The choice between taxi and Uber depends on several factors. If you’re traveling around Rome and need a quick and affordable ride, a taxi is definitely the best option. But watch the meter! If you prefer comfort, punctuality, and don’t mind spending a little more, Uber is better. The happy medium can be found with the Free Now app, which offers both taxis and private car rentals.

Final advice from a Roman

Never accept a ride from anyone who stops you outside the airport or train station and says Taxi, taxi! This is because they’re almost always unlicensed and therefore unsafe. Check the license plate if you book via an app to make sure the car you booked is the one you booked. Watch out for traffic because in Rome, it can be hellish. In fact, if you’re in a hurry, it might be better to take the metro.

In any case, the best way to fully enjoy the city is definitely walking. Come on one of our walking tours and enjoy some good food and the beauty of Rome!
