Pigneto is a neighborhood of Rome, known for its nightlife and for having been the setting for some of Pier Paolo Pasolini‘s films, thanks to its rural atmosphere and houses that seem to date back to another era.
The quarter
The Pigneto neighborhood hides a series of traces, both ancient and modern, still unexplored. This is the story of a place that was created by the ancient Romans and which has spanned many centuries, until it experienced the dramatic days of the Second World War. We will reveal to you the existence of an underground quarry, hidden in the heart of Pigneto, which still remains completely unknown today.
The underground cave was known to the elderly people of the neighborhood. In the 2000s the new owners began research it based on the stories told, which were many and often confusing. Everyone agreed on the fact that the refuge was not called “cave” or “refuge”, but rather with an extraordinary name in Roman dialect: the shelter, or rather, “ericovero”. Even if there was no agreement on where the secret entrance was.
